Bridge

A bridge is a very common of tooth replacement. Bridges can replace up to three teeth in a row. They are a sister to crowns because they cover the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. There must be at least one tooth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth in order to place a bridge. These teeth are shaped and a 3D scan or impression is taken. At this first visit a temporary bridge is placed to keep the teeth from moving while the bridge is made.

The 3D scan or impression allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of the bite and jaw movements and design an ideal bridge. The bridge is then sculpted so that bite and jaw movements function normally once the bridge is placed. This process takes 2-4 weeks.

At the second visit the bridge in permanently “cemented” onto the supporting teeth. Bridges can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Teeth that have been bridged can still get cavities, so it is important they be brushed, flossed and maintained just like regular teeth.
